Though the product was first flagged in April, new details have emerged regarding both the severity and quantity.

A Recent Nuts Recall Just Got Hit with the Country’s Highest Risk Level

Though peanuts technically aren’t nuts (they’re actually legumes, just like chickpeas and lentils), they’re still a solid option when hunger hits. These crunchy snacks offer health benefits ranging from helping with blood sugar control to lowering cholesterol, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
Just last month, we let you know about a peanut recall happening in two states. Now, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is providing more details on how much product is affected—and how severe the recall event is.
In a Monday enforcement report, the FDA announced a total of 1,716 cans of Heinen’s Honey Roasted Peanuts have been recalled from retail stores in Illinois and Ohio.
Heinen’s is a Midwest-based supermarket chain with 19 store locations in northeastern Ohio and five in Illinois, per the company’s website.
Though the FDA previously released information about the recall, the latest report shows the agency officially designated the event as a Class I recall on Monday, May 5. A Class I label is reserved for the most serious types of product recalls where either serious health issues or death are possible risks.
The recall originally went into effect due to incorrect product labeling, specifically “product labeled as peanuts, but may contain cashews.” The FDA’s April press release said one allergic reaction had been reported, though it’s unclear if additional health events have been reported in the weeks since.
The provided details are:
- Heinen’s Honey Roasted Peanuts
- Net weight: 8.25 OZ (234 g)
- Packaged in a composite can with plastic lid
- UPC: 020601401877
- Product number: 20601401877
- Heinen’s internal item number: 112235
- Distributed by: Heinen’s, Inc., Warrensville Hts., OH 44128
- 12 cans per case; 143 cases involved
Of note, the FDA’s report also lists a “Best If Used By” date of 10/01/2025 and a “Best By” date of 10/03/2025. Additionally, the two dates are also listed as “Lot Numbers.” It does not further clarify why there’s a slight difference in the “Best By” wording.
The recalling firm, Trophy Nut Company of Tipp City, OH, says they are both a manufacturer and distributor “known in the industry for roasting, mixing, and seasoning premium quality nuts and trail mixes,” per the company’s website.
On the Heinen’s product recall page, customers in possession of the affected product are instructed to “please discard it and return to your local Heinen’s for a full refund.” Additional details are provided on the company’s page as well.
